TOPIC: How Cold?

How Cold? 1 year 3 months ago #166

It was 40ºF when I rode today and I only saw 2 other riders on the same route that I would usual see 70 or more riders on. Made me wonder...

How cold does it have to be before you stay home by the fire? Do you cut rides short when it get below 50ºF? Also how cold before you put on the balaclava?
Any day on the bike is a good day

all depends. If the sun is out, how windy it is etc. I rode outside a couple weeks ago in the low 40 range. It was oik till I turned into a 25 mph head wind on the home bound leg.

Here in Wisconsin it I can handle a 20 mile ride in 30F weather with long tights, toe-covers, a jacket and vest, nice gloves and a helmet liner. As long as it is sunny and the roads are dry.

It is the lack of sunshine outside of my standard 8-5:30 working hours that slows me down the most. That, and all the time it takes to put on all those clothes.

I have ridden down to about -30 C (-22 F) though we haven't had much of that kind of weather this year. Below -30 C I'll take the bus or, if I am really at the end of my tether, drive.

Rode 50 miles this past Sunday and it was 30 when we started and 40 when we finished. Was cold for first five miles or so, then was OK for most of the ride, but the wind kicked in about mile 35, and it was very tough getting back to the truck. I was pretty much spent for the rest of the day. This is much colder than I typically ride, but have a century the first weekend in April and need to get the miles in.

I don't stop riding unless there is an inch or more snow on the roads! I can be seen in Rochester NY with 5-7 layers of spandex occasionally. I usually switch to the Balaclava when it gets below 35, but don't cover the face with it unless it is below 25. Below 15 I douple layer a neck guard over it.

Did a 135km ride in 3C windy weather last weekend, it's really no problem as long as you dress right. I do long for the summer though.

My coldest long ride was 17 F at the start and 26 F at the finish 5 hours later. It's totally about appropriate layering. I was completely comfortable.

Also I've been putting HotHands in my shoes - that helps too! :P

edit: Also Killerbee, in response to your OP, I usually use my thin balaclava below freezing and my thick one around 20 F.

I'll only get the Turbo out if its snowing or less than 4 degrees - in the UK we don't cope with cold weather well - no gritting etc, so road are dangerous!
I'm also the type which will look out the window see it raining and think "what a good day to ride" :silly:

My limit has been 40 F lately. I've been going out for 5:30am rides, so not only has it been cold, but dark! It's really the only free time I have to do it though, so what choice do I have?

I put on a headband that covers my ears below 45 degrees. I used to ride in freezing weather, but it just hurts the lungs to breath in air that cold. I think I would say that as soon as it hits freezing temperatures, the face should be covered.

My lower limit may change as the winter approaches.

Direct Carbon Frames from China

You are here because you love to ride, love a great deal and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty.  This site is here for the same reason.  We built our own bikes from carbon fiber frames purchased from mainland Chinese manufacturers.  We read many forums, listened to sound advice, rolled our sleeves up and got to work.  The result is a lot of fun and we continue to build more bikes.  This site is the same. IT DEPENDS ON YOU.  What categories would you like to see?  What other content?  You speak we listen and then get to work making this the one stop for everything necessary to build your own bike from the frame up.  Let's have some fun.
